Paddling with Purpose, Grounded in Heritage

Perpetuating Hawaiian values and strengthening our community through the tradition of outrigger canoe paddling.

IMUA NIUMALU

Our Mo'olelo

In 1997, Niumalu Canoe Club was born from a simple yet powerful foundation — a paddle in hand, faith in the heart, and a dream guided by ke Akua. With humility and determination, a young Coach Teo carried a vision: to build a hale that would one day shelter his own paddlers and canoes, a place where keiki could gather, learn, and grow.

Through many trials and blessings alike, Coach Teo and Peter Chow, alongside ʻohana and dear friends, built Niumalu from the ground up. What began as a small seed planted in prayer soon took root and began to flourish.

Grounded in culture, strengthened by community, and guided by aloha, Niumalu Canoe Club has become more than a place to paddle. It is a gathering place. A place where keiki learn discipline and kuleana, where respect for the ocean is taught, and where ʻike and traditions are passed down from one generation to the next. It is a place where ʻohana is formed — on land and at sea.

In one heartfelt prayer during the early days of the club, Coach Teo made a promise to ke Akua: he would continue to coach as long as ke Akua continued to send him keiki. Nearly 30 years later, that promise still stands. The canoes continue to be filled, the voices of keiki continue to echo along the shoreline, and the spirit of Niumalu continues to grow.

As long as there is ocean to paddle and keiki eager to learn, the legacy of Niumalu Canoe Club will move forward — one stroke at a time.
